I want to purchase new kitchen window coverings. My kitchen is 20x20, the floors and the cabinets are red mahogany, and the granite cabinet tops are a light background with black brown and a little golden orange running through it. The walls are a golden tan and the woodwork is white. I need to find an accent color to brighten up the kitchen, as it appears a little dark. I have a small window above the kitchen sink, a window on the other side of the island, and French doors leading to the patio. What would you suggest for the windows and what color would you suggest?
I also want to use the same accent color for the living room, which is visible from the kitchen. My living room of course has red mahogany floors. The leather sofa and chair is brown. The furniture is red mahogany. What should I do for the big bay window? What color would you suggest for walls?
Sure, hope you can help.
Thank you for visiting my site and asking your question. It’s a little bit difficult to determine the matching accent color without seeing your kitchen interior, but I will try. The first one that comes to mind is white or cream: they work well with all other colors, they lighten up the room and also would match your white woodwork. These colors are also very easy to find if you prefer blinds or shades as your kitchen window treatment. If you need privacy or light control in your kitchen – I would recommend you to get faux wood blinds for windows and sliding panels or drapes for French doors. You can get them in matching colors. Here are some products you may consider:
Other variation is window valances and curtains. Though they are not as practical for kitchen windows as faux wood blinds, they would give you a wider choice of styles, patterns and colors.
Of course, white or natural drapes will work fine, but you can choose also red, orange, yellow gold or olive green (these colors will also work for your living room). You can get valances for kitchen windows and patio door curtains for your French doors. You may use the same fabric for them or find them in coordinated materials. As for your living room walls, there are many colors that work great with red mahogany. I recommend you to look for light colors, such as cream, light tan, light yellow or beige. Keep in mind that window curtains will look differently with different wall painting. Therefore, you may need to get bay window treatment that is not similar to your kitchen window coverings.
