Windows Bottom Covering Ideas

Hi, I am looking for ideas to only cover the bottom third of my windows. We need a little privacy but still want to see the outdoors.

Hi Jeanne,
You have several options for covering only window’s bottom.

The following window treatment styles may give you exactly what you need - you will get privacy but still will enjoy outdoor view and natural light. The choice depends on your preferences and a budget, of course. I list them here from most to least expensive.

Cafe Shutters
Stylish and quality window treatment usually made of wood. They are similar to standard window shutters, the only difference is that cafe shutters cover only the bottom part of the window.

Top Down/Bottom Up or Top Down Only Window Shades
There are several types of them - cellular, pleated, woven wood and roman window shades. You can move the top and the bottom of such shades independently (top down/bottom up shades), or open them from the top to the bottom only (top down only shades). They are cordless and usually are operated by continuous lift loop system. To view some of them click on links below:
Cafe Curtains
These curtains like cafe shutters cover only the bottom part of the window. They are very popular as kitchen and bathroom window treatment. You can find them in a number of styles:

  • Tab top curtains

  • Tie top curtains

  • Pole pocket curtains

  • Grommet curtains

  • Cafe curtains with curtain rings

Some people consider them outdated, but I think their look depends on their style and fabric they are made of. If you like contemporary style - choose grommet or tap top cafe curtains. You can also make them by yourself – it’s quite an easy project if you know how to sew, of course.

I hope this will help you,

Bottom curtains only
by: Anonymous

I live in a condo complex on the second floor and would like to keep the top of my windows uncovered. Instead of top down shades, have you ever heard of hanging curtains at the three quarter of bottom half of a window only?

You May Try
by: Alina

You may try, though, I?m not sure it will look aesthetically pleasing. I would suggest you to place at first pieces of fabric to your windows exactly where you are going to hang them and see if you like their look. Besides, three quarters are almost a half, so why not to install them as typical cafe curtains?
